Ever since I was a kid I have been trying to figure out what location the background was ripped from.

It looks like a hybrid, the white buildings look like something from Spanish or Portuguese mountain towns

Then they may have photo shopped an Islamic empire period castle or mosque in the background as it looks like one of those found in Turkey

(as well as photoshop water ripples in the sky to make it look like Atlantis)

Anyone have any idea of what pieces they used to make the sky box?

It's a photo of Casares, Spain.

I know that's been shared in trivia sections about this game but in reality the castle in Casares looks Christian and nothing like the castle in wet dry world which looks more Islamic inspired

Perhaps it's the angle, but I agree that the castle looking building doesn't look like the actual one in Casares. It looks like it has four spires extending up from the corners and to me appears layered, like some sort of ziggurat. The Casares castle only appears to have two spire-like things (I'm not architecturally sophisticated, so I don't know what you call them). Here is another angle:

I also don't know what angle that Wet-Dry World picture was taken at. The town is most definitely Casares, but the castle may be something else.

I never even noticed there was a background when I was a kid
Contrary to David Stern I don't know where the bodies are buried.

When I was a kid (and before I knew how to get to the cannon), I thought the 'town' in the background was the 'town' you were supposed to find the red coins in.

I figured you had to get to the cage but I had no idea how to get into the cage. WDW mostly just pissed me off as a kid
